There are a lot more strategies to combating depression and managing those risk factors. Look online or get a book and pay attention to it. This is an abbreviated list, and not everything on it may work for you, but you need to try. Set yourself up for a win. A lot of these things that I do have become habits, and habits start with repetitive action.
From the Dads Group
Mick: Did I do a good job of watching out for my mental health? I donât think so. Sometimes, things just got so busy and I didnât feel like I was doing things well. I took up gardening and that helped and gave me time to think. Admitting that you have faults though and not trying to be perfect is where my head usually went.
Larry: I have a high tolerance for crap, but winter is tough on everyone. The days are shorter and thereâs less time, but you still have all the responsibilities. Iâm an introvert but even I found that getting out of the house was important. It doesnât have to be a big deal or a huge adventure. It could be a walk by yourself.
Jake: I enjoy getting together with everyone, but it just leaves me wiped out. Physically and emotionally, Iâm just done. I donât typically enjoy large groups of people. Keeping a good schedule helps me know what to expect and also plan my time away from crowds and people. It allows me to recharge.
Mike: Find something that is yours and only yours. Switch gears in your head when you get to it and leave the guilt behind. Having something that can take you out of the moment of parenting, something where you are looking after your own needs, helps with staying alert and fresh.
